Advances in health status of children conceived through assisted reproductive technology

Abstract

Since the advent of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in 1978, a new era has been opened for infertility management. Currently, ART is widely implemented across the globe, with over 10 million children born to date. The health status and quality of life of ART offspring have evolved into a critical public health concern, drawing extensive attention from the global medical community and society. This paper reviews recent domestic and international research on the health outcomes of ART-conceived children, with a specific focus on three core domains: perinatal outcomes, metabolic status, and potential risks associated with behavioral and cognitive development. Synthesis of the evidence indicates that the overall health status of ART-conceived children is favorable. It is recommended that single embryo transfer be prioritized to reduce multiple pregnancies, thereby mitigating the risks of perinatal complications and neurodevelopmental abnormalities at the source. Meanwhile, sustained surveillance of long-term health trajectories is warranted to facilitate the optimization of healthcare services for this population.
