Abstract

Objective To investigate the prevalence of childhood peer violence victimization and its association with health related risky behaviors in female adolescents, and to provide evidence for prevention of peer violence. Methods A total of 757 female adolescents from a higher vocational school in Beijing were enrolled to finish a self-reported questionnaire. Results 28.0% of the respondents reported childhood peer violence victimization, including being humiliated in person (22.3%),being hit by classmates (11.9%),and being hit with objects (0.8%).Compared with the respondents without childhood peer violence victimization, those who reported childhood peer violence victimization were at significantly increased risk of health related risky behaviors, including feeling sad or hopeless, attempted suicide, drunkenness, unhealthy weight loss behaviors and depression syptoms. Conclusion Childhood peer violence victimization is related to developing health-related risky behaviors during adolescence.Prevention strategies regarding childhood peer violence may reduce health-harming behaviors in adolescents.
